(Excerpt from article on pp 6-7: "A Brief History of Zion Church in Urbana, Frederick County, Maryland 1802-1961" By: Knight A. Kiplinger) ...Zion figured prominently in local Civil War doings, including (according to local lore) use as a hospital after the Antietam campaign of 1862. Among the many graves in the Zion cemetery are markers for two Confederate casualties, one from the Battle of Monocacy (July 9, 1864) and a subsequent cavalry skirmish in Urbana soon thereafter. Monocacy was the famous "Battle That Saved Washington," where Union forces under Gen. Lew Wallace -- later author of the best-selling novel "Ben Hur" -- valiantly delayed the march of Gen. Jubal Early's rebel troops towards a lightly defended Capital City.
These fallen Confederate officers were Lt. Col. William Cabell Tavenner and Major Frederick F. Smith, both of the 17th Virginia Cavalry. Tavenner was wounded at Monocacy and died two days later. Smith was killed in action during the skirmish with Union cavalry in Urbana and buried at Zion. (Tavenner's body was later reinterred at his family's cemetery in West Virginia.)...

THE HISTORY OF WEST VIRGINIA, Old and New; Published 1923, The American Historical Society, Inc., Chicago and New York, Volume II; pg. 604-605; Wood County; Biography of LEWIS N. TAVENNER.
...Isaac Tavenner, father of Judge (Lewis N.)Tavenner, gave his life to the farm. From 1837 to 1865 he lived on a farm adjoining the Town of Elizabeth and thereafter on a farm at what is now Warthmore Station in Wood County. During the Civil war he declined to take an oath binding him to the support of either the Federal or Confederate government. He based his objection on the fact that he would stay where he was and would support which ever side was victorious, and such was his reputation as a citizen that he was allowed to abide by his resolution by the troops of both armies. Both he and his wife were devout Methodists. He died March 13, 1892, and his wife, on January 20, 1891. Her maiden name was Priscilla Harriet Warth,... p. 233 -- Death of Isaac Tavenner -- One Of Our Oldest Citizens Passed Away
On yesterday, Sunday, March 13th, at 2 p. m. at his residence above this city on the Ohio, died Isaac Tavenner, in the 80th, year of his age. Born January 27, 1813, on the “Old Tavenner Farm” (Tavennersville) he had lived in this state and immediate section for almost fourscore [NOTE: four times twenty = eighty] years, and had witnessed the many changes since when a lad he had attended school in the old house near where the Buckingham Hotel now stands, and with his little mates played where are now our principal business streets.
In 1829 he united with the Methodist Church, in 1838 married Miss P. H. Warth, of what is now “Warth’s Bottom” just below Ravenswood, and with her lived over 52 years, having reared a family of six sons and two daughters, all of whom, except one, an attorney of Kansas City, reside in our city and county.
An upright, honest man, his life consistent with his profession, the Methodist of 63 years, passed away, perfectly resigned, saying that his life work was done and all was well.
His demise will be of interest to his many friends, and our readers, as he was one of the oldest native residents of our county.
His funeral will occur on Tuesday, at the Westley Chapel; burial at Riverview Cemetery about 4 P. M.

p. 233 -- Miss B. Tavenner -- Esteemed and Respected Woman of City Passes to Her Reward
As a result of an accident sustained several weeks ago when she fell, sustaining severe injuries, which were aggravated by advanced age, Miss Bette Tavenner, one of the most respected women of the city, died Monday night. Miss Tavenner was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Tavenner, pioneer residents of Wirt county, and a sister of Judge Lewis N. Tavenner, of this city. She was born in Elizabeth, W. Va., but came to Parkersburg in 1865, where she had resided ever since. Her gentle and lovable nature, found expression in many acts of kindness quietly done and "Miss Bettie" was beloved alike by old and young and her death will be learned of with sorrow, particularly by the older residents of this city who knew her in youth and walked with her down the long course of years until her summons came. She was deeply religious and when in good health took an active interest in church work affiliating a number of years ago with the First Baptist church of this city.
Miss Tavenner is survived by four brothers who are Judge Lewis N. Tavenner and George W. Tavenner, of this city; James Tavenner, of Buena Vista, on the Inter-uban, and Isaac Tavenner, of Kansas City, Missouri.
The remains were removed today from her late residence, 803 Fourteenth street, to the home of her cousin, Miss Mary Tavenner at 414 Seventh street. The funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at the residence of Miss Mary Tavenner, 414 Seventh street, by Dr. J. C. Killian of the First Baptist church. The interment will be made in the Riverview cemetery.
